Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell (1968) is a charming romantic comedy-drama directed by Melvin Frank, starring Gina Lollobrigida in the titular role. Set in a picturesque Italian village, the film explores themes of love, identity, and the complexities of human relationships with humor and heart.
Plot
Mrs. Carla Campbell (played by Gina Lollobrigida) is a beautiful and charismatic widow who has managed to maintain a comfortable life in her small Italian village by claiming that her late husband was an American soldier who died during World War II. To support her and her daughter, Gia (Janet Margolin), Carla receives financial assistance from three different American men, each of whom believes he is Gia's father.
The story takes an intriguing turn when the three men—Phil Newman (Phil Silvers), Justin Young (Peter Lawford), and Walter Braddock (Telly Savalas)—return to Italy for a reunion of their wartime regiment. Each man wants to reconnect with Carla and meet "his" daughter, unaware of the others' existence.
As the men begin to suspect Carla’s deception, hilarious misunderstandings and heartfelt revelations ensue. Gia, unaware of the truth about her parentage, is caught in the middle, forcing Carla to confront the web of lies she has spun. In the end, the film delivers a touching message about love, forgiveness, and the importance of family, no matter how unconventional it may be.
