Corporate Media Caves to Right Wing Outrage Machine - Video

Can you cover Arizona and the American Southwest as an impartial journalist if you have been critical of Israel in the past? According to Republicans and corporate media, you can’t.

The Associated Press (AP), one of the most powerful media organizations in the world, fired a 22 year old Jewish American journalist after a smear campaign by very online right-wingers over tweets she had made in college that were critical of Israel and some of its supporters.

Emily Wilder was a News Associate in Phoenix, Arizona, for the AP. Based in the American Southwest, she helped the AP cover the region by assisting in the editing and production of content for publication. In May, Stanford College Republicans began circulating some old tweets of hers in which she called ghoulish Republican mega-donor Sheldon Adelson a “naked mole rat” and criticized the Israeli government for its policies in occupied Palestine. (To be fair, Sheldon Adelson was a naked mole rat.)Initially, the AP told Wilder that they would stand up for her, before immediately caving to the far right outrage mob, and firing her.

Apparently the AP feels some remorse, with the managing editor of the AP remarking that mistakes in Wilder’s firing were “mistakes of process, and not of outcome.” I guess that’s an admission of guilt? Or an apology? Or maybe neither.
