‘NEATH ARIZONA SKIES 1934 stars John Wayne, Sheila Terry, George Hayes, Shirley Jean Rickert, Yakima Canutt and Earl Dwire. It's another in Duke’s series of low budget Lone Star B westerns, sort of Movie Making 101. ‘NEATH ARIZONA SKIES is the story of a little girl, half-Native American, who is heir to a fortune in oil. Duke is helping her find her missing father and joins, with his saddle pal, George Hayes. When Wayne and Hayes join an outlaw gang, complications ensue.
This story, in fact the script for this film, was used only a year before for one of the lowest of low budgeted B westerns, CIRCLE CANYON starring Buddy Roosevelt, which we posted two days ago. Watch it if you dare!
I was curious about comparing the two films and thought many of you western buffs out there might also enjoy seeing the two back-to-back. CIRCLE CANYON features lots of terrific riding, great hats and tack and some really terrible, laugh inducing acting and certainly makes ‘NEATH AZ SKIES seem like an A western in comparison.
Duke’s Lone Star production is blessed with a cast that includes George (Pre-Gabby) Hayes as his sidekick and Yakima Canutt, stunt specialist supreme as an outlaw, Duke’s double, and the stunt coordinator. You’ll even see Yak, doubling Duke, chasing himself! The little Native American girl is played by Shirley Jean Rickert, after she appeared in the MICKEY McGUIRE comedies and a year before she became part of the OUR GANG comedies. As her Father, you’ll probably recognize character actor & Lone Star stock company player, EARL DWIRE.
Lone Star’s producer Paul Malvern began his career as a child acrobat, did stunts in silent films and then got lucky with making the B westerns with rising star John Wayne. When Malvern began producing at Universal, with considerably higher budgets, he took Wayne and, together, they made a fun series of non-westerns, including THE SEA SPOILERS, IDOL OF THE CROWS and I COVER THE WAR. Malvern’s later Universal productions include HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, HOUSE OF DRACULA and the color spectacular ALI BABA AND THE 40 THIEVES.
