Sumo is Japan's original sport with over a thousand years of history. Sumo originates from myths of the gods comparing their strengths which is described in Japan’s oldest history books: 古事記 Kojiki (712) and 日本書紀 Nihon Shoki (720).

Due to this, in ancient times, sumo was practiced as an offering to the gods and to pray for a rich harvest and peace. So even today, besides sumo as a competition, a festival called "Dedication Sumo" is held.

By fighting close to being fully naked, the sumo wrestlers or 力士 rikishi represent their oaths that they will not be cheating in front of the gods.

By the way, rikishi wear a kind of traditional underwear called まわし mawashi, which is a kind of fundoshi. This is to protect the rikishi's private areas and to make it easier for him to exert his strength by tightening his waist and stomach.

Rikishi have a strict ranking system based on their strength and the color and type of fabric of their mawashi changes depending on their level. A simple black mawashi made of cotton is of a low rank, while a colorful mawashi made of silk is of a high rank. So it also plays a role like the colors of a karate belt.
