All the stars came out for the ninety-fifth Academy Awards! And though the ceremony was technically Sunday night in Los Angeles, it was really "Everything Everywhere All at Once"! That movie took home SEVEN awards, including Jamie Lee Curtis for Best Supporting Actress, Ke Huy Quan for Best Supporting Actor, Best Directing, AND Best Motion Picture! Plus, Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian-identifying woman to take home the Best Actress Oscar. As for the other acting award, fan favorite Brendan Fraser won Best Actor for "The Whale" to cap off his incredible comeback year. Our congratulations to all the winners!
In other news, It seems in America, nothing is certain except DEBT and taxes! New data shows America’s total credit card debt reached a record NINE HUNDRED AND THIRTY BILLION dollars at the end of last year! The average credit card debt rose to roughly FIFTY-EIGHT HUNDRED dollars, an over EIGHTEEN percent year-over-year increase! Unsurprisingly, delinquencies – meaning payments sixty days or more overdue – are also on the rise. And that’s WITH very solid employment numbers, with job openings still outnumbering the available workers! Of course, rising interest rates aren't helping!
And America's students are DITCHING college in WORRYING numbers! Enrollment in college undergrad programs is down EIGHT percent since 2019. That's the biggest drop on record, and a variety of reasons are being cited. Some young people are being tempted by the currently-high pay being offered in the service industry. Others are following their passions. And MANY are just put off by the student debt they'll be saddled with after college! But experts are worried the trend could lead to more labor shortages in vital job categories, like healthcare and technology.
They're ALSO worried how the less-educated will fare if the economy gets worse. So decide wisely, young folks!
